From 2 days to just over 2 weeks, the last 18 days have been some of the best of my life.

Our wedding was amazing – everything we had hoped it would be and more. I don’t think I mentioned this before, but in stark contrast to horror stories I have heard from others, Amy and I had a blast putting our wedding together. Much of that was thanks to the fact that we both get a kick out of infusing stuff with as much meaning as possible so we really enjoyed thinking imaginatively together about the elements of what we called a weekend celebration of marriage (hope to share more about this in a future post). Aside from that, we are just fortunate enough to have a lot of friends and family that were excited to pitch in and help.

Our wedding photographer/videographer, Tim Miller, who you should definitely check out if you are in need of some mad skills, is sending Amy and I 2,300 pictures to sort through. Until we have the professional stuff all put together, here’s a slide show of random pictures from some of our friends and family.

Right before the wedding weekend kicked off, Amy and I invested in a Sony CyberShot that shoots video in HD. Here’s some of those videos. (Hint: If you have the time – just under 30 mins. total, they will automatically play in order.)

Amy and I both want to say a huge thanks to everyone who contributed to and attended the most significant weekend of our life together – much love.

In this wonderfully busy season of engagement and wedding planning, time to reflect comes at a premium, making it that much more important and valuable. 6 months into 2009, I find myself thinking about the 12 months of 2008. Though it could never capture the depth of the experiences and stories connected to it, here’s a brief slide show of the highlights of 2008 for JR Rozko.

Disclaimer: This post is not (really) about cars.

On the heels of that last post, I thought I would throw this out there and say how glad I am that most of the folks in my life seem to be those who are really trying to press into the full implications of what following Jesus means and looks like right here and now. They are not, for the most part, Christian Escapists – those whose value for Christ primarily has to do with their get-out-of-hell-free card. They want to live out lives of discipleship for the sake of their neighbors and the world.

Anyway, that being said… I caught this in a parking lot the other day, read it, kept walking, and went back to take a picture once my internal annoyance-o-meter reached its peak.

This bumper sticker perfectly illustrates the degree to which a subtle neo-gnosticism has seeped into how we understand the Christian faith. The idea of gnosticism is simple: eternity has nothing to do with here and now. Therefore, for example, I can “have my treasure in heaven,” and live however the heck I want.

I am reminded of my friend Wess’ post, “How Do We Look for the Theology of a Church?“ One of his suggestions was to check out the cars in the parking lot on Sunday morning. Now, this may not be a perfect gauge (and Wess doesn’t suggest that it is), but in terms of a non-gnosticized version of the Christian faith, it is a valid point. That point being, if we understand the good news of God’s Kingdom as something we get to participate in and live out for the sake of the world here and now, then guess what, it will envelop every aspect of our lives, including (perhaps especially including) the economic dimension.

The gospel aims to get a grip on not just our hearts, but our whole lives. Imagine the visible impact of church communities which aimed to live well below their means because of their rejection of consumerism and materialism, or, even better, because they so badly wanted to experience the blessing of sharing and giving – of living lives unencumbered by extravagance and luxury. That seems like a way of being the church that is more worthy of a crucified and risen Messiah.

OK, so I realize this really isn’t a big deal, but I just wanted to point out that I took the time today to change the stock photograph in the header of my blog to a picture I took downtown on Beale St. in Memphis. The picture isn’t all that amazing, but I did edit it some and tried to doctor it up to look semi-cool. For all of you feed-reader readers who won’t bother to click through (can’t say as I blame you), here’s the picture for your viewing pleasure.
