You can see the details of the Ride for Refugees here.

You can visit out pledge page here.

The Facebook Fan page is here.

If you’re a Twitterer, you can follow here.

Thanks for checking it out and for your help. I’ll try to throw up some pictures and thoughts on the event next week.

Try to jump and hang in the air for 10 seconds. How’d you do? You either failed, cheated, or are reading this from the moon. You are a captive of gravity. It pulls at you, refusing to let you wander off.

Culture is a lot like that. The various elements of the culture we inhabit pull us toward some sort of center. Culture, in all of its various forms: language, architecture, customs, expectations, rhythms, etc., creates a sort of reality for those who live in it. This is what I am calling cultural gravity.

Cultural gravity cuts two ways – it simultaneously frees and binds. As regular gravity gives us the ability to walk around and explore our immediate surroundings, it also binds us there, making any desire we have to explore our not so immediate surroundings extraordinarily difficult. Analogously, cultural gravity is what enables us to authentically enter a particular time and space – to know it personally and deeply. But it can also trap our imaginations and stymie us intellectually and creatively. The longer we live with in a particular brand of cultural gravity (geography, tradition, denomination, etc.) the harder it will be to enter new ones with any degree of receptivity or discernment.

Anyone who has ever lived cross-culturally has experienced this tension. It is why new cultures can be hard to adjust to and why we may have a hard time (or outright fear!) returning to the culture we came from.

As one who has had some varied over-seas experience and has moved from the suburban mid-west, to urban So. Cal, to some blend of suburban/urban culture in the midsouth, and now lives outside of Chicago, these are some thoughts I have been having.

In Part 2 I plan to offer some reflections on what I think cultural gravity has to do with missional churches.

If you local city newspaper asked you to describe the Good News – what would you write?

Here’s my submission and I encourage you to check out the other posts offered between now and Pentecost. Feel free to offer your comments here if you like, but there are already several good ones over at JR Woodward’s site that you can add to as well. I will be checking and responding over there too.

The Commercial Appeal is the place where countless Memphians turn for news – some of it good, much of it, not so good. We are a city divided by race, stricken by generational poverty, plagued by crime, and disadvantaged by socio-economic stratification. Good news for us usually comes in the form of an absence of bad as opposed to the presence of beautiful surprises. For those with eyes to see, these problems are far more than the result of individual human errors and failings; they also stem from firmly entrenched systems, paradigms, and powers, which create a broken culture that produces broken people. There is a cycle at work here more insidious than we realize or could hope to finally defeat on our own. But there’s good news.

I’m a Christian and Christians are good news people. In fact, a central manta of the Christian faith is, “Repent and believe the good news.” This isn’t about saying you’re sorry to God so you can go to Heaven when you die. It’s Jesus’ invitation to, by grace and through faith, escape the consequences of our capitulation to a world gone wrong by joining him in the ways he sees and engages the world.

See, God plans to recreate all that has been tainted and lost by evil and darkness. The sphere in which this happens is known as the Kingdom of God. Jesus embodied this Kingdom in his life and sealed it in his death and resurrection. That’s news, but it’s not quite good yet; cause news is only really good when it’s experienced. This news becomes truly good for us when God’s plan for the future intersects with our present. Ours is not good news that God will do, but good news that God is doing.

Jesus was the bearer of good news par excellence and those of us who bear his name but fail to similarly bear good news to the world around us have a share in the guilt and misery of the city and people we are called to lovingly serve. This is where the Church comes in. God means for the Church to be a unique body though whom Jesus actually continues freeing people from harmful things and reconnecting them with God and others. The Christian God is one of relationship. Therefore, God’s Good News to the people and city of Memphis is purposefully intertwined with communities of people gripped by it.

Fellow Memphians, if you’re like me, grieved over the many sad circumstances of our city, if you are desperate for a new start, for healing and wholeness, I hope you will consider the news of God’s desire and plan for the world including the tiny metroplex of Memphis. The news might not be the sort you’d expect, maybe not even the sort you’d prefer, but it’s good in the truest meaning of the word.

I proposed to Amy at the end of February and ever since the main thing on both our minds and the question we were asked the most was, “So where are you going to live?”

It was an ineviatble question (well, for most people anyway) and one we were anxious to hear from God on in the context of community. We prayed a ton, talked a lot, asked those we respect for wisdom and advice, and in the end, felt like we had our answer, Chicago.

This was a really, really hard decision for both of us. Neither of us had a good reason to leave the places we were. I have been in Memphis for just a year, Amy in Chicago since October. Both of us liked where we were living, our jobs, the people around us, and the opportunities God was giving us to serve. We kept hoping something might happen that would essentially make the decision for us, but that never really came about.

So, Amy was in Memphis this past weekend and was with me when I shared the news with the body of Living Hope. This was very hard to do, but brought with it a sense of relief as we begin to make plans for the future together.

I am in Chicago as I write this – we brought all my stuff up here this past Monday and have been busy looking for an apartment since then. I have no leads on jobs as of yet, but I’m actually kind of excited for the search (networking and connections always welcome!)

Amy and I are off to Davenport, IA (her hometown and the location of our wedding) for Easter weekend to see her family and do some wedding planning and then it’s back to Memphis for me to enjoy the remainder of April with good friends and the Families on Mission Seminar that we have been planning for the end of the month. I will be in Chicago full-time as of May 1.

So the really big question, do the Bears, Bulls, Cubs/White Sox have what it takes to make me a true Chicago convert?!

Thanks to the generosity of Amy’s team leader and co-workers, she was given the opportunity to work remotely for the last two weeks. Throw in three weekends, and you’ve got almost 3 full weeks together!

And thanks to some too-good-to-be-true family and friends, that time was jam packed full of fun and memories.

If you missed it, be sure to check out our engagement story, cause that’s where the fun began.

Engaged on Friday night in Chicago, we drove back to Memphis on Saturday, on the phone virtually the entire time and dreaming about our wedding and honeymoon inbeetween (details on both, TBA).

A neighbor gifted Amy and I with two tickets to see “Light in the Piazza” at the Midtown Playhouse. It was a fun and romantic show and we had a great time.

There was a blizzard in Memphis Saturday and Sunday, so attendance was way down at our morning services, but two of my co-pastor friends took it upon themselves to announce Amy and I’s engagement from up front to much applause and congratulations. We spent the rest of the day with our friends taking turns holding baby Asher.

On Monday Amy and I were off to Washington DC. We were there for a church planting conference and had the chance to stay a couple nights with Amy’s aunt and uncle as well as see a few friends we each have there.

Amy was there as a representative of iTeams - making connections with those who are looking for ways to help people get involved in international missions, and I was checking into Ecclesia as a possible resource and partner for Living Hope as we think about church planting. The conference was fantastic and we were really happy to connect with our friend and Fuller professor, Eddie Gibbs. Got to see some of the city on Friday afternoon and then we were off to Ohio.

My mom picked us up at the airport and after visiting for a few hours – it was lights out as we were both dog-tired. Saturday morning we traveled down to Canton to see some of my closest friends. We spent the day with them, talking all kinds of wedding details and just catching up. Monday the 9th was to be my 30th birthday so my friends arranged a dinner and a party at my friend Jay’s sweet new downtown office. Tons of people came to meet Amy, say congratulations, and Happy Birthday. As usual, I got sick on Sarah’s puppy chow, but well worth it.

Sunday was another full day of cruising around, meeting, and catching up with people – Meysembourgs, Snavely, Solida’s, Neftzer, Gouglers, and many others.

Monday was a full day with my mom and other family. Amy got the grand tour of Stow, where I grew up and got to meet both my Aunt Fannie and Grandma Ernsberger.

Had an incredible dinner at Macaroni Grill with my buddy Kenny and then ice cream, cake (actually Boston Cream Pie – a personal fav!), and a few gifts back at home. Amy had written to all my closest family and friends asking for pictures and short blurbs and she compiled them all together into one of the most meaningful presents I have ever received.

We left early Tuesday morning to head back to Memphis where we were set to have a slightly more regular schedule. Amy was working and so was I and thanks to the generosity of our good friend Lee, we had an extra car to use to help each of us get around to appointments and meeting spots. Still, the days and evenings were packed.

Tuesday we picked up the car from Lee, gobbled down dinner, and Skyped about all sorts of wedding related stuff with Amy’s parents. Wednesday we cooked dinner and hosted my house group – that never ends early (which I love!). Thursday the Donahoe’s, who host Amy when she comes to town, invited us and our friends Matthew and Lisa over for a celebration dinner and then we caught Slumdog Millionaire with Greg and Chandler.

We did lots of wedding planning on Friday and then my friend Ryan from LA flew into town to spend a few days with us. We took him to Rendezvous to get some good Memphis BBQ and then watched The Dark Knight (it just never gets old).

The night was rounded off with a midnight run to Gibson’s donuts for the after 11 – 6 donuts for 1.25 deal. Saturday morning we met our friends the Kerrigan’s at Memphis’ best breakfast spot, Brother Juniper’s and then drove around some of the cooler neighborhoods in urban Memphis and even visited an estate sale.

Ryan and I went for a quick run and then the three of us went to see “Race to Witch Mountain.” No, not because any of us particularly care for “The Rock,” but because Amy was in it. She did some extra work while she was in LA and in the movie you get to see her twice during the credits. Have a look!

Sunday morning was filled with plenty of congratulations since it was the first time that many people got to see Amy and I since we had gotten engaged. Ryan, Amy and I had a great lunch with our friends Zach and Liz and then we spent a few hours (she went nuts!) with Liz as she took some engagement pictures (not currently available). We actually ended up being late for a surprise engagement party that my house group was throwing for us in the form of an ultimate frisbee game.

We had a great time playing frisbee and then I had the privilege of baptizing a new friend who is on his way of to Fuller.

We spent the evening over at the Kerrigan’s eating up all the leftovers from the folks who have been providing them food while they adjust to having a newborn in their lives and playing everyone’s favorite game, “… And a bottle of wine.”

While I was at staff meeting Monday morning, Amy and Ryan worked from a coffee shop in the Cooper-Young district and got to check out another great BBQ spot – Central. We went downtown for a few hours to check out some of the sights and walk down Beale St. before Ryan had to had to the airport to head for home. Amy and I had yet another great dinner with our friends Sam and Allison and then made a short little video for our wedding website (unveiling soon!).

I just put Amy on the Megabus back to Chicago a little bit ago and I miss her already. While we are bound and determined not to let it take over our relationship, the next several months will be filled with planning and preparation for our big days and those to follow. We cover all your support and prayers as we try and figure out the future together and plan for a celebration of marriage that will be both enjoyable and meaningful to all those who can celebrate with us.

As a pastor, I spend a lot of my time thinking about and actually attempting “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up,” – equipping.

Sadly, the extents to which ministry has been professionalized, consumerism and individualism have distorted our notions of the gospel, and Christendom has undermined the nature and purpose of the church, often serve to confuse us as to what this actually means.

In attractional models of church, many are satisfied with merely finding people to fill slots so that stuff gets done. Others lay guilt trips on people for not serving enough. But even when we do the right thing of helping people discover their giftedness and passions and then inviting them into opportunities where those life-giving things might find expression, we often have a view toward the external mastery and refinement of skills and talents so that their use of them will “attract others.”

I would never say that getting better at what you enjoy doing is a bad thing, but I would say that missionally, the equipping of others has mainly to do with cultivating spiritual maturity so that gifts and passions may be stewarded well not with being polished and excellent by socio-cultural standards.

Case in point…

Last night I and several others of my house group had the opportunity to serve at Calvary Rescue Mission in downtown Memphis. This is an organization that serves homeless and displaced men by providing food, substance abuse recovery, and the deep love of Jesus. When we go, we get to help serve food and one of us is invited to share a message. Last night, my friend Sam had the chance to share.

On Thursday I called him and we talked a bit about what was on his heart and what he was planning on sharing. He expressed some nervousness about feeling “qualified to teach form the Bible.” To which I replied with something like, “That’s probably the very thing that actually does qualify you to do this.”

Sam doesn’t have a Bible degree. He’s relatively new to the whole church scene. And he’s certainly not accustomed to preaching regularly. But, Sam shared from his heart last night what God has been teaching him through his study of the book of James and the ways in which Jesus is becoming more and more real to him everyday. Sam (and I’m sure he’s cool with me saying this) is not the sort of speaker that your average church community would put up on stage week in and week out, but sadly it has nothing to do with his not being spiritually equipped to teach. Rather it’s on account of his inability to entertainingly capture the attention of celebrity-driven, linear thinking, consumer-oriented folks (I don’t excuse myself from often falling into this category).

In the same sort of vein, one of our friends from the mission sang a solo. His voice was not good. He had absolutely no stage presence. And he wore a sweatshirt that read, “Jesus is Awesome.” Again, this is not the sort of guy your average church would want leading others in worship, but is has nothing whatsoever to do with him not being spiritually equipped to do so and everything to do with our misconceptions of what it means to be equipped.

Despite their cultural-defined techincal inabilities, grace, hope and love overflowed from both Sam and our soloist friend. All those present left encouraged and changed as Jesus met with us through the ministry of these two guys. It grieves me to think of how often we miss out on the ways in which God uses those we would never expect (or perhaps more shamefully, prefer).

It’s been a while since I did some sort of a, “here’s what’s going on with me” sort of post. Well, the wait is over.

Where to begin? Remember my interview with famed, “Amy G.”? Let’s start there.

That was right before Christmas, and then for Christmas, my mom and brother came to town. None of us really have any money right now (a gloriously freeing reality) so our Christmas morning was spent opening up tons of random stuff that I had picked up at the dollar store for everyone. I’m not sure I can even remember a Christmas morning that was so full of laughter and enjoyment.

That’s right, I’m wearing shorts for Christmas!

The day after Christmas we all had to go our separate ways. Mom, back to OH, Alex, back to NY, and me, off to Kenya.

A few days after I got back, as part of the contract we had negotiated for the interview, Amy G. came down for a follow up interview. This one lasted for a few days and was filled with plenty of serious conversations.

This is from when I asked some questions on sensitive subjects and she tried to choke me.

The highlight of the middle of the month was offered by way of my friend Jimmy and his floor seats to the Memphis Tigers basketball game at the FedEx Forum. We sat down a ways from Penny Hardaway!

I love living in midtown and have been anxious to find a way to get more involved in the community. That desire has finally taken shape in being able to help teach ESL (English as a Second Language) classes to a group of beautiful adult refugees on Monday evenings through the Refugee Empowerment Program of Memphis Leadership Foundation.

The capstone event of January was a trip to Chicago where I serendipitously ran into Amy G. who invited me to go see her family in Davenport, IA and do some bald eagle watching off of the north Mississippi River.

Not bad for the first month of the new year. Can’t wait to see what February has in store.

Yesterday – Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Today – the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States, are two big days.

Especially as a citizen of Memphis, where Dr. King was assassinated, the importance of all he stood for comes powerfully home. Memphis is in many ways a broken and hurting city. Racial division (if not tension) remains thick. Systems and structures which perpetuate generational poverty and crime continue to plague us. And the dominant expression of church here in the mid-south seems unable or unwilling to powerfully engage this sort of brokenness. Memphis is a city desperate for the good news of God’s Kingdom breaking forth into the world.

I caught a glimmer of this hope the other day as I was remembering King’s famous, “Paul’s Letter to American Christians” and came across this quote (from that sermon) on one of the walls of the downtown YMCA where I workout…

Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.

I am happy to stand with those who are excited about the progress we have made as a country, evidenced in our election of a black President. I am even happy to stand with those inspired by the hope that this new President and administration aim to offer to a nation that has lost its way in war, economic crisis, and poor international reputation. Yet I long for more.

Yesterday we celebrated a man and his legacy of striving for racial reconciliation, care for the poor, and justice for all. Today we celebrate the dawn of a new era for our country, an era (perhaps) to be marked by change for the better.

But I long for the day that only God can bring about, a day when all our human striving and labor will be tested as with fire. The chaff of our striving will be burned away and the precious stones of our striving will be even further refined. On 2 days when it is so easy for me to get caught up in the acclaim of two good men, one who had a dream and another who represents, in part, the evidence of that dream coming to pass, I pause to remember the supremacy of the one man, who, at the height of his glory, was abandoned by all as he hung on a cross and proclaimed, “It is finished.”

I don’t really like it when a full week goes by and I don’t have a chance to blog – it’s like I get creatively constipated and then I don’t know where to begin.

Aside from just getting back into the swing of things and playing catch up since returning from Afghanistan, I have been busy doing a variety of things – getting the new house settled, wrapping up the online course I have been teaching, and training for a 1/2 marathon, along with other life-randomness. So, where to start? How about the 1/2 marathon.

My New Year’s resolution was to get a 1/2 marathon under the belt before the year’s end. I found out that there is one in Akron on Sept. 27, and since I had 2 friends doing the race (one doing the full marathon and another the 1/2), I decided to give it a go. Afghanistan came at a bad time in terms of training, so I hit it hard as soon as I made it back. Well, the left knee, as it has been doing for years, continued to give me trouble and I had to go see an orthopedist. He read through a previous MRI and did an x-ray. You should have seen his face when I told him I was training for a 1/2 marathon in 2 weeks?! He actually said, “You’re running on this?” I just started rehab this morning and we’ll see how much that helps. Next stage is a fluid injection to make up for the cartlidge that is damaged and/or missing, and then surgery will be a last resort. So, sadly, no race for me, at least not this month. There is another one here in Memphis in December, so perhaps then.

Semi-related, as a part of training and moving to midtown, I have been frequenting the downtown YMCA, which is a great facility. There is a trolly that goes back and forth, though it ends a mile from my house. The other day, I ran down to the Y, worked out some there, and took the trolly back, and ran the last mile. It’s a cool part of downtown Memphis that I was excited to experience for the first time.

My friend Joey stumbled on a newspaper article last week about a gathering in a local establishment called Beer and Bible, facilitated by Phyllis, Tickle, someone I have been wanting to meet ever since moving to Memphis. I had the opportunity to go and participate in the discussion last week and just loved it. It was about the most eclectic group of folks you can imagine who used the 7 deadly sins as a jumping off point for discussion.

I also had the chance to accompany my friend Jon and a few other guys who do some work with FCA at Carver HS to a football game. Carver is a school in urban Memphis with few resources and about 30 guys on the team. The team they played is an over-resourced suburban school with about 30 guys/position. Needless to say, Carver got crushed, but it was fun to be back on the sidelines of a HS football game.

What else? With the help of some friends, lots of painting at my new place has gotten accomplished and I also added a few pieces of furniture as I seek to create an inviting and hospitable sort of place. Pictures forthcoming.

The class. I am in the final stages of grading final papers for the first go-around of an online class for Fuller – The Emerging Church in the 21st Century. The class was filled with great discussion and insights. The majority of students feel as though they have a lot more clarity on what the EC discussion/movement is all about and I have reall enjoyed helping them to explore their questions, misgivings, and thoughts in general.

Lastly, while the website leaves a little to be desired, the atmosphere at Republic Coffee doesn’t. I am writing this from their location – one I very quickly become a huge fan of. If you’re around midtown, check it out.

Well, thanks to this lovely crew (not pictured, but equally awesome are: Jon O., Greg J., and Russell M. I managed to get all my stuff in my new home yesterday afternoon.

And the unpacking, sorting, and arranging has commenced.

I am in need of a fridge, some furniture, and some other odds and ends (Bueller, Bueller…), but I was pleased to find (after 4 months of separation from my stuff, which lingered in storage), that I had most of what I needed for the house.

If you are someone who needs my new house address, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll be happy to send it to you.

Now, I wonder who likes to paint????

Living here has already paid off. I am less than a mile from my good friends, the Watson’s. Around 10:30 last night Matthew called and asked if I could come over and stay with Nathan, their 2 year old. He and Lisa were gonna have to take Elias (their new born) to the hospital as he was running a 101 fever. I was so happy to. In my mind, this is a major part of what “living in community” is all about. You are close enough to those you want to share life with that you can be there for one another. Far from experiencing this as a burden or bother, this request was precisely the sort to make me feel “at home.”

Thus begins the journey of discovering the truth of this popular bumper sticker…

After 4 months of getting to know Memphis, living with various people and in various places, and living out of a suit case, I have found a place to hang my hat – at least for the next year.

here for more pictures (not my stuff in the house)

Here’s what metropolitan Memphis looks like

Downtown Memphis is actually to the west of “the loop” between the Mississippi River and 240. Inside the loop is generally referred to as midtown, though it has more specific designations in certain parts. To the east of the the loop is Germantown, Cordova, and Collierville. Piperton, where our church community has purchased land for some future use is a little more east than Collierville. I considered living in virtually all of these places.

Living subversively in a suburban context is something I care deeply about and feel like a good portion of my life will probably go to, but for a smattering of reasons, it doesn’t seem that now is the season for that. I mentioned a slew of factors in the decision making process in my post about being scared to live in the suburbs and I don’t really think that any decision I would have made would have been THE right decision, but here’s why I am pretty excited about this place.

1) Location. This house puts me within walking distance (less than 1/2 of a mile) of coffee shops, restaurants, shopping, the largest park in the city, the playhouse, and the only theater I am aware of in Memphis that shows Indy films. Here’s a little map I started to put together of all the stuff I can walk to easily. There’s a ton more that is easily within biking distance (1-3 miles) such as the YMCA where I’ll work out and my bank.

2) Set-up. The house is perfectly set-up to invite others to explore intentional community. There are 3 huge bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms on the 1st floor as well as a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment with its own kitchen and a separate entrance on top.

3) Neighborhood. The neighborhood is both racially and socio-economically diverse and by virtue of living here I will be part of the “Tucker-Jefferson Neighborhood Association,” an active group which aims “to maintain and improve the dignity and integrity of the residences and businesses in the area, to preserve the diversity of the area, to insure orderly an compatible land use in the area, to encourage homeowners living in the area to improve their homes, and to work together on problems and issues of certain concern.”

4) Opportunity. Living Hope is a primarily white, affluent, suburban church that is asking God how we might engage and be a blessing to urban Memphis as well as to where we are. Having more people move into urban parts of the city will inevitably be a big part of that.

I am truly grateful to have found this place and am really looking forward to having a context to engage on a more constant basis.

Update: Just after I posted this, I happened to come across a few relevant posts on this subject. Be sure to check out David Fitch’s – “The Middle In: The Unique Missional Opportunity,” and Joe Thorn’s, “I Love the Suburbs” on a brand new blog about the gospel in the suburban context, SubText.

I hear people talk quite frequently about the “dangers of the city” and how unsafe certain parts of town are. But if I were being honest, I would tell you that I am far more scared to live in the suburbs than I am to live virtually anywhere else.

By design, suburbs are places of isolation, disconnection, and compartmentalization. Their very existence is predicated on cultural values of materialism, consumerism , and individualism. All of this makes it much harder (not impossible mind you) to follow the way of Jesus – a way of simplicity and interconnectedness with those on the margins of society.

I bring this up because I will very soon need to decide on a more permanent place to live. I have been looking in mid-town which is more urban, racially mixed, threatened by crime and violence, accessible to pedestrians, affordable, and artistic. All of this most naturally appeals to me.

But, I have also been looking in the Germantown/Collierville area which is suburban, predominantly white, relatively free of crime and violence, necessitates a car to go anywhere, more expensive, and culturally bland.

Complicating these basic dynamics are factors such as these…

– most of the folks at Living Hope are suburban people thus I feel I should live among them

– I am a young adult pastor and mid-town is more attractive to young adults

– we gave bought land and are discussing the potential of building a gathering place on it even further east from urban Memphis in Piperton

– the idea of our church planting or having more of a presence in urban Memphis is something we are discussing

– currently, the people I am aiming to really share life with live predominantly in suburban Memphis

– it maybe the case that more of our folks would head toward mid-town if a few more folks blazed that trail

… and I could probably list more. I have been basically paralyzed by this decision of where to live and why. Maybe I can just rest in the fact that no matter what, I am looking to rent and not buy, which ties me down probably for a year at the most. On top of this, where ever I wind up, I am seeking to be there with the express purpose of taking Jesus’ command to love my neighbors literally and seriously. So, whether in mid-town or the burbs, I am sure there will be folks who are hurting and in need, and I find some solace in the primacy of this calling.

So there ya have it – with all the transparency I can muster, the suburbs scare me. I would much rather live in a place where I could be shot or robbed than in a place that has the potential to chip away at my soul and spiritual sensibilities every so slowly and subtlety. I welcome your thoughts.

My position at Living Hope has been enigmatic to say the least. I am a Young Adult Pastor, but my task is not to create or run young adult programs per se. Instead, I have spent my time relationally connecting with young adults and seeking ways to help them connect to the broader church community as we try and let what it means to be the church flow from that.

Young adults fall into 3 general categories: singles, young married couples, and young married couples with kids. I have been fortunate enough to be embraced by communities of all three types and yesterday was a microcosm of those worlds for me.

Yesterday morning I socialized mainly with my house group, which is comprised exclusively of pre-kid, married couples. We collaborated to help one of those couples move and then I spent the afternoon with one of the married guys, Zach, checking out various neighborhoods and properties as we think towards the possibility of intentional community (post on that forthcoming!).

Then, I had dinner with a slew of my friends who are married w/ small kids. We were celebrating Clay’s graduation as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. This is a great time for me – getting to see how parents deal with kid stuff, trying to love on them myself, and embracing the mess that simply must be embraced if sanity is to remain.

Finally, last night I spent with a bunch of my single friends. People were really just hanging out and talking. We played a game my friends from Ohio lay claim to, “… and a bottle of wine,” and it was a great time.

Each of these groups is of course incredibly unique and I treasure my time with all of these folks in accordance with that uniqueness. I am thinking more and more about how to help others discover the joy of sharing life with those in various stages of it, but in the meantime, boy am I thrilled that it’s something God has orchestrated for me. It’s just good for my soul.

Besides being a gratuitous reference to Dupree’s Self-Help spiel in “You, Me and Dupree,” it’s the best title I could come up with for a post full of randomness and fun linkages. You’ve been warned, no coherency is to be found here!

Listen to this song, it’s awesome.

I hurt my knee last week and it is bad enough that it’s preventing me from running and playing sports, basically making me miserable.

Even though I missed out on being with some of the most important people in my life,

I had a great weekend with some of my newest friends. Most importantly, I am pleased to announce that at 29 years of age I am still a back flipping fool!

My friend Julia is one of the coolest people in the world. She’s an excellent writer, isn’t afraid to be honest with people, and was kind enough to be my conference wife in the Bahamas at Soularize. But all of that is eclipsed by her commitment to the reality of God’s Kingdom in the world. She is so committed to ending the the global trafficking of people for sex and slavery that she had the words “until the last lock breaks” tattooed on her forearm. Julia, the church could stand a few more men and women with your sort of heart.

I am definitely mourning the loss of a community where the sharing of life amongst people of diverse seasons of life was the norm. Note to Canton friends: Don’t forget that our experience is not that of most.

As someone whose mind is basically consumed with the idea of spiritual formation on the personal and corporate levels, I am really excited to have made the decision to seek out a spiritual director/counselor that I think might be an important piece in that process for me.

I have the opportunity to address the Living Hope community this Sunday. I am definitely excited for the opportunity to share some of my story and heart, but also nervous as someone who has only lived among these folks in this new place for 2 short months (not to mention the nervousness which always accompanies the prophetic element of my personality).

That being said, I have really enjoyed reengaging what it means to be a pastor in the context of a missional church community. Challenges around every bend, but I love the team I get to be a part of.

I really miss my house church and Anabaptist friends. There was a connection there on a deep level that I am yet to discover here in Memphis.

I have come to the conclusion that relationally speaking there is probably nothing more frustrating to me than trying to engage with people who can’t communicate deeply. I hate how little patience I often feel in this regard.

My friend Jason and his family are in the process of joining an Eastern Orthodox church and he has been blogging about it. As I was sharing my my friend Emily, another brilliant and articulate lady, the Eastern Orthodox church has a tremendous amount to offer in terms of its theology and ecclesiology, though few realize it.

OK, think that’s enough randomness for one evening.
