• Life (with a baby) as Mission

    December 31, 2010

    I’m a father.

That’s the first time I’ve actually written those words and it’s kind of surreal.

Over the last two months we have been sharing with our family and friends that we are going to have a baby.  Most recently we shared the news in our annual Christmas newsletter (let me know if you want one) and then via Twitter and Facebook.

As if the trip could have been any more memorable, this is news that we actually discovered on our final day in Cape Town at the end of October.  I even managed to capture the question and answer to the matter on video…

We found out right before we hopped aboard a ferry over to Robben Island and the first people I got to share the news with was a married couple from England.  The husband had led one of the breakout sessions I attended and his wife could not have offered a better reaction!  Her shriek of excitement for us drew the attention of everyone waiting in line.  We decided to wait a bit longer after we returned to share the news with people in our lives, but that didn’t stop me from finding a way to work it into the conversation with every random stranger I had a conversation with who I knew wouldn’t “leak it.”

Needless to say, we are beside ourselves with excitement.  With so many friends who have had various kinds of trouble related to pregnancy, we take nothing for granted. But, all things being equal, it seems that our baby (about 14 weeks along now), is healthy and should join us more fully at the end of June.

As this blog has served to be a platform for the sort of theological reflection which emerges as a result of viewing life and mission as one and the same, I can only imagine that becoming a parent (and all that entails) will be one of the most formative aspects of that endeavor.

Congratulations! I love Amy's reaction in the video – thanks for sharing that precious moment.

And, hang on for the ride of your lives! Parenting is wonderful, life-transforming, and definitely does impact your thinking theologically.

Congratulations! My wife & I are still pretty new to it (we have a 1yr old & one on the way) but can already tell you that parenting is hugely formative and amazing. Blessings!

Thanks Dawne – I'll tell Amy you liked her reaction. You should have seen us right after this – crying, laughing, and hugging in the midst of a very busy mall. It was quite the spectacle.
