• Discussing Church, Christ, and Community

    May 14, 2010

While Amy was away I had the chance to read some books that has been on my hitlist for a while.

Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional by Jim Belcher

Knowing Christ Today: Why We Can Trust Spiritual Knowledge by Dallas Wilard

Free for All: Rediscovering the Bible in Community by Tim Conder and Daniel Rhodes

I plan to offer some thoughts on all three eventually, but I was wondering if there might be some lifeasmission readers out there who have read any of these and were anxious to have some discussion on one in particular.

(Books link to BetterWorldBooks.com, my book supplier of choice).

Read "Free-For-All" while taking the MAGL seminar portion of "Biblical Foundations of Mission" @ Fuller. Many of the Bible studies I've been a part of don't seem to wrestle with the texts in the way Conder and Rhodes present. I find a lot of the discussion falls under the heading of "how do we get this passage to fit into what we already believe" which gets old after awhile. The combination of reading that book, and the discussions from the seminar course have got me thinking about how encourage and foster different kinds of questions brought to the text. Any thoughts there?

Hey Joe. Well, of course the authors of that book offer their template. The community I am a part of, though we want to develop this more, has a community-wide teaching time around the text which will be preached for an hour before the worship service. During this time everyone has a chance to ask questions and offer thoughts on the text. The preacher for the morning can then adapt their sermon to reflect these insights.

An idea I would like to play with more is whether or not churches wouldn't do well to stay with a particular text for several weeks or a month before moving on. This gives the community a longer period of time engage with the text on personal and communal levels.

I have read Knowing Christ Today and Deep Church. I found Knowing Christ to be very provocative for me, and would love an opportunity to review the book through your blog. My two cents!
