
Although I haven’t had a chance to pick up the book yet, I did just finish reading the first chapter of Tony Jones’ new book, The New Christians. You can check out his blog, the book, and read the first chapter here.
Tony and Emergent Village have come under some serious fire from all sorts of angles over the years, but on the whole I think he and the village are a big part of what God might be up to in term of the life and vitality of the church in Western culture.
What I find to be the greatest characteristic of this “generative friendship,” is its refusal to be reduced to conventional categories. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately depending on how you look at it!), it is also failing to fall into conventional categories which tends to get you into the most trouble with those whose identities have become enmeshed with with institutions and power structures – those systems predicated on things continuing to be a certain way (just ask Jesus).
