• The Theology of Linkin Park

    July 19, 2007

I don’t know a ton about Linkin Park, but they are a band whose name keeps coming up in various spheres of my life.  I know my brother Adam is a fan and the other day my friend JR (that’s right, “there are 2 of them,” [SB]!) was showing me one of their videos on his oh so glorious new iphone.  I provide the video for your viewing pleasure.  And you can read the lyrics here.

I hardly know where to begin in terms of making spiritual and theological connections between the sentiment of this song and the message of the gospel.

I really enjoy Linkin Park’s music and always have appreciated the spirit that they sing it with. In thinking about the theological nature of this song and many others like it, I believe it’s important to recognize the sentiment behind the music even more than what the printed lyrics state. The emphasis on this song seems to be “mercy” the song emphasizes that point as well recognizing that he (they ) are part of the problem as well, like we all are-

I really think that much of the music that’s out now, even top 40 stuff has hidden in it very prophetic words for the church. I believe groups like this can be speaking prophetically not only to the culture but directly to the church and that excites me. Question is, will we listen

I think I was most struck ny one of the last lines in the song…

“Today this ends. I’m forgiving what I’ve done.”

It makes me wonder what it is in our culture which inclines people that really it is only from ourselves that we need forgiveness? I mean, even leaving the need we have for God’s forgiveness aside, in the context of the song, why wouldn’t the singer desire the forgiveness of those he has hurt? Just a curiosity I have been playing with.
