• The Unfolding of God’s Story

    April 25, 2007

Something I have wanted to do for a while is to read through the Bible chronologically in order to get a better take on the unfolding of God’s story in Scripture.  I first started thinking about this when I took a Writings course with Dr. Jim Brenneman.  In that class we talked about various aspects of the canonization of Scripture and how some books came to be included in one collection and others in another.  What I came to realize was that to the people for whom these books were written, the chronology was ingrained into their identities already, so the formation of the canon served purposes other than the simple telling of God’s story.

Today, I happened to run across the blog of someone who has developed a year long reading plan to do just that.  You can download a pdf he put together here.  For those of us Gentiles (all non-Jews), we tend to lack identies shaped by the telling of the story of God’s relationship to His people and to the world.  Thus, this could be quite a fruitful exercise.

Thanks Robert for putting this together.  My plan is to try and catch up with the reading plan and continue on through the year.

    JR,
Love your thoughts man. Miss you back here. Had a great mission experience in Peru last month with the whole family. It was an incredible time together. And I love your title “lifeasmission”. Because mission should be our whole life, right?

Front to back each year. That’s how I read it. I love reading the bible this way but sometimes I feel like I’m out of the new testament for too long. Let me know how it works out for you.

Oh and one more thing: you’re using too many words that end with “al” for me. They’re way over my head. What are you in a masters degree program or something? Just go out and play with God.

Rick!! So great to hear from you brother. I am so glad that you got to be with your entire family in Peru – what an opportunity. Wilmer, one of the professors that works in my office, is actually Peruvian and I look forward to sharing that with him. Thanks for the compliment on the title of my blog. People tend to take it 1 of 2 ways, either the way you took it, that mission should permeate our entire lives, or that our mission is really to just fully live. I actually meant for it to work both ways, clever huh? ;)

I wouldn’t worry about being out of the NT for too long, there’s a way in which we don’t get the full import of the NT until we learn to embrace the OT as part of our identity as the people of God, so don’t be afraid to dwell there my friend – make it a part of who you are.

Sorry about the big words, they just make me sound smart to all the people who don’t know me like you do. At the core, I’m still the really simply guy you’ve always known who wants to walk with Jesus and help others get a grip on what it means to be gospel people. The irony is, the more I am able to do the former the more I see just how daunting and challenging (though filled with joy) the latter can be.

Ok, off to play. Hi to the rest of your family. By the way, I am pleased to be the newest subscriber to your blog – love it!

    JR,
Glad to hear you are the same dude – in pursuit of, or rather, being pursued by, the dangerous Jesus of Nazareth. I had no doubt my friend. You are just smarter now.

Tell Wilmer I said Hola! I would love to know where in Peru he is from. We were in Chilca, which is about an hour south of Lima. We’re helping ChildReach Ministries build a home for pregnant street kids. We hope to open it this year.

Sara is a nursing student and Andrew is doing well. He is playing drums for the Senior High worhip team. He’s got more time in the mission field than I do. He’s been to Mexico and Peru and spent 5 weeks last summer in Biloxi, MS doing hurricane relief work. I think they are both missionaries in the making.

I’ve been able to negotiate some time off work to give to ChildReach Ministries. I led a trip to Ecuador the week before Peru and will be leading a few more trips to both places this year.

In pursuit of radical Christianity. The un-nice brand that turned the world upside-down in the 1st Century. The kind where people in the gutter aren’t ministry projects but true friends. The kind where fishermen and tax collectors ( and hopefully an architectual hardware consultant – aka me ) ditched their jobs to follow this Jesus.
