• A Fulller Sex Talk

    March 4, 2006

The other night Fuller’s School of Psychology sponsored a discussion entitled, Sex in the Seminary (a lame play off of Sex in the City, I know).  I wish I could recount the entirety of the evening and discussion to you, but alas, time does not permit.  Suffice it to say, the presenter was advocating a Christian engagement of sexuality that emphasizes its goodness rather than its dangers.  He lamented the fact that mostly the Church has made people feel like sexuality is a bad thing and needs to be tamed at all costs.  One need look no further than the Catholic church to see the implications of such a take on sexuality.  More than that, he wanted to argue that Christians, far from being seen by the outside world as prudish and passionless, should rather be the people to whom the rest of the world turns because their ability to embrace sexuality in all the goodness in which God created it.  That’s just a snapshot of the discussion which was both provocative and insightful.

My real purpose in posting this just to pass along some funny things that were part of the evening.  The first is a slide the presenter used in his presentation illustrating a grossly deficient, and all too common, supposedly Christian way of addressing sexuality.

The second is a picture of my friend Ryan who participated in a skit in which various couples were brought to the Pearly Gates and were either admitted to turned away based on whether or not they had “gone all the way” before getting married.

The last thing is a link to a video illustrating just how unfortunately embarassed we seem to be about issues of sexuality.
