• Why I Love Fuller

    October 5, 2005

Let me tell you why I love Fuller. Before you, clad in pinstriped short shorts and an Oasis t-shirt, stands John Goldingay one of the most astute Old Testament scholars of all time. I am in a class being taught by John this quarter on Isaiah. We had class this evening, to start with John read a passage from Isaiah and then paused for a few moments of silent reflection before asking the class for their thoughts on the passage. Each time he does this there is a profound sense of awe which seems to come over the class as we ponder the word of God. Then, minutes later and in marked levity, John is explaining how Israel managed to “cock up” what God was trying to do. I guess what I am trying to say is that Fuller seems to make a point of recruiting professors who take always what they teach, but never themselves, very seriously. This guy has written books that have shaped the way people approach the Bible and especially the Old Testament and next Monday I am gonna be having “tea and crumpets” with he and his wife, Ann. He assured all of us, he’ll be teaching us the appropriate way to drink English tea!

JR, I didn't know you were back in Pasadena. Oh, just saw the date:). I have not had Goldingay but am so appreciative of the creativity and spiritual worldliness of Fuller faculty.

Hi Elaine. Yeah, once a day a random post gets recycled to Twitter and Facebook as a way to make sporadic use of older content. Goldingay was definitely one of my favorites at Fuller, he's a treasure.
