• Truth and Freedom

    October 16, 2005

Out of my ever-emerging, creative dimension has emerged yet another surprise.  As I was running the other day and contemplating why so many people think living for God is a joke, it occurred to me that very often it is because our ideas of truth and freedom are very confused.  Somehow or another, these thoughts took shape in this song.

    Truth and Freedom

I know a man, said the truth’d set us free

But I got to wonderin’, is that true for you and me

I do my best, try to do what’s right

More often than not, I seem to lose that fight

    Chorus:

Is it true, am I free

    Verse 2:

So I give up, I say what’s the use

No one else seems to care, ’bout this thing called truth

Now I live by my rules, I do what I wish

No one’s my boss, I find my freedom in this

    Chorus:

It is true, am I free

    Verse 3:

So what’s the deal, how come I’m not satisfied

Got everything I want, but there’s still this longing inside

I’m not the only one, I know others feel like this

Maybe I was wrong, was there something I missed

    Chorus:

It is true, am I free

    Verse 4:

Think I get it now, what freedom’s all about

Not always getting what you want, but when giving abounds

What a beautiful thing, to be truly set free

To freely give others, what God’s given me

    Chorus:

It is true, I am free

    ———————————————

How much pain could be avoided, how radically could our world be changed if we lived out the reality that freedom is not getting to go whatever we want, but true freedom, rather, is finding ultimate satisfaction in enjoying life as God intended us to.
