This past Tuesday evening I had nothing else to do so I decided to hang out at the new Arabica (coffee house). I had an idea for a song so I threw my guitar in the car and headed over. I was really looking forward to sitting outside, sipping a Glass Mocha, and noodling around with the words in my head. As I sat down I realized that this Arabica was hositing an open mic night. I thought “cool, this enhances the ambiance of the evening further still.” The a guy namen Mark who worked at there came out and asked me if I’d perform. I explained that I really was nothing special and I was just wanting to enjoy the evening. He explained that he was in a bit of a predicament as this open mic night was his idea and a bunch of his friends had canceled on him. He implored me to fill in even if just for a little bit. I finally conceded. I ended up doing two of the songs I had written in the past yeat, a Hootie song and a Tom Petty song. There was a really cool crowd and a few people even made a point to comment to me afterwards how much they had enjoyed my playing. I had a whole lot of fun. I am by no means an extremely talented singer or guitar player – I am average at best. But I must admit that I really enjoyed palaying and singing – especially the songs God had enabled me to write.
So what’s the point? I’m not really sure there is much of a point. I just really enjoyed that evening and wanted to share it. I suppose if I was pressed I would want to encourage you to do what you love to do without letting the fact that you might not measure up to other peoples standards stop you. Till later..
